Pesto Recipe No Pine Nuts
Easy pesto sauce recipe with walnuts and parsley without pine nuts and no sugar! This is a delicious and healthy quick lunch or side dish stirred into pasta or rice.
Classic pesto uses simple fresh ingredients. If you love olive oil and cheese then you'll love pesto! Many recipes replace pine nuts with other nuts, this time we used walnuts.
They have a neutral creamy flavour for a rich smooth sauce that pairs beautifully with pasta and a variety of proteins and vegetables.
Pesto recipes use quite a bit of olive oil otherwise it will be too difficult to blend the ingredients with a home blender.
Load up your blender, I use a Nutribullet which works well for most sauces, you can blend the pesto as smooth as you like. You can also use a stick blender, it will just take a little longer.
Parsley and raw garlic adds the well-known punch to this pesto.
Whether you use parmesan or pecorino romano, the Italian hard cheese adds even more salty creamy goodness to your pesto sauce.
I just needed to gently shake the blender once during blending to fully combine all the ingredients.
There you go! I love the fresh bright green of pesto, this will happily last in the fridge for up to 3 days.
This recipe makes about 370 grams of pesto.
Different Pesto Recipes:
The most basic version of pesto uses fresh basil, but substituting with parsley is a tasty alternative. You can also sub with baby spinach, the peppery taste is great in this recipe.
Of course pine nuts are well-known for a basic pesto recipe, you can also use walnuts or almonds, and cashews too are an amazing creamy alternative.
Substitute the Italian hard cheese with a vegan hard cheese for a dairy free, vegan pesto recipe.
How to use Pesto:
Add a little lemon juice and stir through a pasta salad.
Stir into your favourite hot pasta and sprinkle with more cheese for a comforting lunch.
Use it to top a tomato and pesto pizza.

INGREDIENTS
- 20g Fresh Basil
- 50g Fresh Parsley
- 75g Walnuts
- 50g Parmesan or Pecorino Romano
- 3 cloves Garlic
- 150ml Olive Oil
- Salt to taste
RECIPE METHOD
- Add parsley, basil, walnuts, grated italian hard cheese, peeled garlic and olive oil to blender
- Blend the pesto until smooth, you may need to remove and shake the blender
- Best served immediately
