Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Legs
Slow cooker barbecue chicken legs are a testament to tender, fall-off-the-bone goodness, infused with smoky barbecue flavours that meld effortlessly with every bite.
Whenever possible I love to cook meat on the bone. There's always another level of flavour!
And with this 4 ingredient slow cooker chicken recipe (that's 4 ingredients not including the salt and pepper) the slow-cooking additionally results in even extra depth of tastes.
As for which cuts of chicken will work for this recipe - this works great with legs, thighs, drumsticks, wings, breast, the whole chicken.
This time I quartered a whole chicken, keeping the skin on too because again, it's adding even more extra flavour!
If for ease you want to use chicken breast for this recipe, it will of course work just great.
I used dried garlic granules/powder and paprika with salt and pepper to season and sprinkled it all over the chicken skin.
Then stir the chicken legs/thighs/breast etc. to coat all the meat thoroughly. Arrange them evenly in the base of the slow cooker.
As for the size/weight of the chicken, mine was quite a small one at 1.6 kg in total but you can use any weight of chicken pieces as long as they fit in your crock pot.
Then pour in your sugar-free barbecue sauce, there are a few commercial brands that make a sugar-free version but if you'd like to make your own, here's our recipe:
Homemade Sugar-Free Barbecue Sauce
How much sugar is in bbq sauce?
Generally a lot! Traditionally it's a very very sweet sauce and if you look at the recipes and ingredients around then usually sugar is right at the top - and not just one type - a lot of the time you'll see 2 or 3 types of sugar like glucose-fructose syrup, sugar, molasses, golden syrup.
This is why it's a great option to make your own.
You don't need to stir the chicken again after you added the bbq sauce, everything will meld together beautifully as it slow cooks!
After 3 hours on high (or 6 hours on low), if you used chicken pieces on the bone then lift out each piece, remove the skin and pull the chicken off the bone - it falls off amazingly!
Place the chicken meat back into the sauce and shred into deliciousness.
The smells as this cooks are incredible. I love using a slow cooker/crockpot for the convenience and when you get home you're greeted by the gorgeous aromas.
We used pineapple juice, orange juice and zest in our barbecue sauce recipe so this tastes really lovely and zesty!
This barbecue chicken on the bone recipe is so tasty and with only a few minutes preparation time it's super low-effort too :)
Once your barbecue chicken is shredded, serve in a bread bun or with salad and rice, or with sauteed potatoes.
True mouth-watering comfort food!
This barbecue chicken recipe is also naturally gluten free, dairy free and egg free too.
I hope you enjoy this crowd-pleasing recipe that needs only minimal effort with juicy, delicious results!
